Google’s ‘OK Google’ hotword used to train Google’s Assistant feature now supports a different voice command, according to Android Police. The hotword has been made available now on a number of Android smartphones. The tech giant started testing the ‘Hey Google’ hotword on phones back in October this year but kept the feature restricted to only a few smartphones. A notification asking smartphone users to set up the ‘Hey Google’ hotword and train the Assistant has already been featuring on devices. The devices that have received the update are Moto GS5, Moto GS5 Plus, Nexus 5X, Oneplus 5T and the Galaxy S6 and S7 series. Training process for the new word starts after tapping the notification to teach the Assistant recognise the user’s voice. The user’s who have not received the update yet can go to Assistant settings and train the smartphone after making necessary changes.

Google has also been planning to make the voice-activated AI software available for other devices too. The AI is now available on tablets and phones running Android Lollipop 5.0 version. However, the Google Assistant will be restricted to only Nougat and Marshmallow OS versions. The news does not surprise at all as majority of people, nearly 26.3 per cent in terms of market share, use Android Lollipop. Only 23.3 per cent of the market share is occupoied by Android Nougat (7.0 and 7.1) whereas Android Marshmallow 6.0 shares 29.7 per cent market share.

Google Android has the ability to set reminders, create a shopping list, give alerts on maps, ask about the weather, and numerous other things. The Google Assistant can also search for pictures in the Google Photos apps and can understand language as well. For example, if you tell Google Assistant to open ‘vacation pictures from June’, it will display relevant results.

The Assistant also powers the popular Google Home speakers and can control smart devices like plugs and lights. The Assistant in Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL phones now supports Google Lens as well. Google Assistant on Android 5.0 Lollipop has started to cater to users with the language set to English in the US, UK, India, Australia, Canada and Singapore.

Google has also announced Assistant for Reliance’s JioPhone, which is a smart phone.
